Grass Shack Records: Music
Downtown
(LifeInPursuit)
Chase Kauhane, Carl Kauhane, Ryan Higgins
LifeinPursuit is Chase and Carl Kauhane, and Ryan Higgins. They are young men who grew up on the northwest coast of the Island of Hawaii, and have been playing and writing music since their early childhood.
They came to Grass Shack Records a little over a year ago, sat down and played informally most of the songs on their proposed album, New Horizons. I was impressed. Their song subjects, mature arrangements, sophisicated lyrics, their playfulness, and intelligent use of dynamics and compelling vocals resulted in songs that are engaging, refreshing and timeless.
It was a complete joy to work with Ryan, Chase and Carl. I always looked forward to our studio sessions which were always full of fun and creativity.
They have continued to write, and I have heard a number of fresh new songs , so if you find them as compelling as I, you'll be happy to know a second CD is in the birthing.

"Life in Rotary"
By Rotarian Francis Kuailani
Life in Rotary, Bring us peace and harmony
Life in Rotary, Bring us peace and harmony
Life in Rotary, Bring us peace and harmony
For the love that we share, In our community.
Is it the truth, Will it be fair to all concerned
Will it build goodwill and better friendships
Will it be beneficial, To all concerned
For life in Rotary, Brings us peace and harmony.
__(c) 2010 Francis I. Kuailani Sr.

High Strung
(Tiger Rising)
May 1, 2004
"Tiger Rising" is Steve Cline (Guitar, Laud, etc), Tiger Paw (Jessica Marcus) (Percussion) and Andy Rising (Cello, Harp, Vocals). Their eclectic style has been called "chamber folk". This song is the first track from their soon-to-be-released album "The Shore Calls the Sea". This album is a luscious sonic banquet.
Recorded in Kona Hawai`i, this instrumental was written by Steven Cline. It features Steve's 'high strung' or 'Nashville tuned' guitar, Andy Rising on cello, and Tiger Paw on the congas.

This recording includes original compositions by each of the members
of Tiger Rising. These unique arrangements draw upon influences from
the Medieval, Renaissance, and Celtic traditions and effortlessly
blend hints of rock, African, Latin, Middle Eastern, and acoustic
jazz; it's very much World Music! These songs are easy to enjoy but
difficult to categorize. "Chamber Folk," or "Folk Baroque" may come
to mind; appellations that seem to suit a group with such an eclectic
array of instruments and so enigmatic a name as Tiger Rising.

Donald Kauli`a
Donald wrote this song in his head while he was driving down to the studio the first time. He picked up my studio guitar and we recorded Napo`opo`o Shuffle the first time it was ever played. I left in the part where you can hear Donald figuring out a name for the song at the beginning of the track. Check it out!

(Stefan George)
September 23, 2006
Stefan George performed this classic Louis Armstrong song with his dobro and his grainy blues vocals on Sepetember 23, 2006 at the Aloha Theater, Kona, Hawaii. The performance was almost two hours long, and the audience would have stayed all night if Stefan would have kept going. Amazing. This song is part of an album that will be released sometime in 2007.

(James Hill and Bob and Shirley Stoffer)
July 26, 2008
James Hill, ukulele virtuoso, played a concert the evening of July 23, 2008 at the Holuakoa Cafe in Holualoa, Hawaii. KonaBob and Shirley Stoffer were his hosts, and accompanied James in this medley that brought down the house. KonaBob plays his famous Walking Stick Bass, and that's Shirley on violin. I recorded the concert, and mixed it down today, and couldn't resist sharing this great track with all the fans of James, KonaBob and Shirley.
